Catherine's Home
Imagine…you are four years old. You lie in your bed in the dark, floating semi-conscious in and out of sleep. You can’t fully relax because you know he’s coming home soon…you wonder if it was a good day or bad one. Then, you hear the screen porch door slam against the door frame. It jars you awake, and in the darkness you begin to hear deep muffled voices from the other room. The voices grow sharper and louder. You hear her shrieks and shattering glass so you dive under the bed. Crying you wait. A knock comes from the front door and the room is silent. They are here to help…or so they say. ”Why do I have to go? What did I do?” you wonder…
Confused, hurt and frightened, many of the children Catherine’s serves have been immediately removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Having faced more trials than many adults in their lifetime, these little ones often come to the shelter with little more than the clothes on their backs. At times, they come to Catherine’s Home requiring attention to basic needs like nutrition, immunizations, and medical care. Still others need socialization, a caring and patient hand, and structure with compassion.
Named after Catherine Nix, a founding board member and passionate advocate for children and youth, Catherine’s Home was designed with input from children as a welcoming, safe, and comforting place. Since 2005, Anchorage has ensured that Catherine’s has been a warm, cheerful environment where our staff members focus on the care and needs of the children they serve. With the love and compassion they receive while they are with us, these little ones begin the healing of their tender lives. Through the caring support of our staff and volunteers, our young children often begin realizing their God-given value and gifts and begin expressing them openly, sometimes for the very first time. Catherine’s is a true refuge for the children, 0 – 11 years old, who need it.We have been blessed by an outpouring of community involvement, from decoration of the facilities to mentoring and tutoring the children we serve. But, we still have room for you to get involved.
